The following methods for fulfillment are currently used by other HandUp partners and have been effective. We give our partner organizations full discretion to find the best way of helping members purchase items or services so long as you are able to confirm the funds are being used responsibly and that you do not provide cash directly to members.
Checks: Partner can write checks for many larger ticket items including medical bills, licenses, rent, etc.
Online Shopping & Amazon: Order items from any available online store or through Amazon.com. Please remember to include shipping costs in the total amount deducted. Many traditional stores have online shopping options. It is up to you to decide on the safest shipping address.
Grocery shopping and delivery:
- There are several online grocery shopping options such as Safway.com, Amazon Fresh, or Instacart. These options do have increased prices but are still acceptable options if delivery and pre-purchases is necessary.
- If you have a local farmer’s market that uses special tokens, you could purchase those for members’ grocery needs.
- Safeway has gift cards available that have restrictions on alcohol and tobacco so you can use this as an option as well. Or explore if this option is available at any other local grocers.
One-time bill pay: Pay for cell phone bills, rent, transportation costs or other online bills for members using HandUp points. Members will be responsible for related transaction costs. You would need to use your organizations debit/credit card to complete these purchases.
In-person purchases: If you're already out on the streets with members, you can go with a member to the appropriate store to make a purchase in person using a designated debit or credit card.
Gift Cards: Gift cards are a great option for clothing stores, gas, or other items that cannot be found online. We do request that partners only use gift cards for stores that do not sell alcohol or weapons. Safeway does offer gift cards that exclude the purchase of alcohol.
Tip: Short a few dollars and cents on what you estimated for a members goal? Make a transfer for the missing amount from your general fund to fill the gap!
